Cultivation Practices
Once the plantation has established itself, proper management is important, following these practices:
1. Canes should be cut about 10 or 12 cm [four or five inches] above ground, and above the node; this will prevent water from entering the stalk, becoming stagnant there which can lead to rotting. Cuts should not be made any higher for the buds that remain on the stalk will produce branches and block access.
2. Stalks that are ill formed, sickly or are over five years old should be cut; this pruning facilitates movement through the plantation. All stalks that have fallen, are split or broken should be cut and removed, as well as branches that may appear in poorly cut stalks.
